This eclectic event is coming to Llandudno in October 2024 – The Longest Yarn.
A month-long Llandudno tribute, October 2–27, 2024, to the War Effort behind the D-Day Landings of 1944. Llandudno goes back to the 40s and celebrates the skills of knitters and crafters to bring history to life.
This October, Llandudno will host a month-long tribute to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, celebrating the efforts of the Allied forces during WWII. The event, running from October 2 to 27, 2024, will bring history to life through a variety of creative and interactive exhibits, highlighting the contributions of communities under Allied control.
Key Attractions
The Longest Yarn: A modern-day 3D equivalent of the Bayeux Tapestry, this 80-meter woollen depiction of D-Day events is on tour across the UK and the USA. It narrates the challenges and triumphs of the Normandy landings, showcasing the global effort to secure peace.
Knitted Churchill Avre Tank: Crafted by the Ripon Community Poppy Crafters, this full-sized knitted tank (24 feet by 9 feet by 7 feet) will be displayed in the Victoria Shopping Centre, symbolizing the innovative technology used during the war.
Gown of Poppies: This stunning gown, created by the Creative Criccieth – Criccieth Creadigol Crafting Collective, will be displayed in Clare’s Department Store, commemorating lives lost to wars.
Post Box Toppers: Over 30 post box toppers from around the UK will be showcased, each depicting personal and often overlooked D-Day stories.
Poppy Trail: A trail of crafted installations and key WWII points of interest around Llandudno, guiding visitors through the town’s significant contributions to the war effort.
Supporting Organizations
Local organizations such as the Home Front Museum and Amgueddfa Llandudno Museum are key supporters, offering fascinating objects and stories from the wartime era. While most exhibits on the Poppy Trail are free, entry charges apply to these museums.
Volunteer Opportunities
The event is entirely volunteer-driven, with opportunities to help with poppy installations, staff exhibits, engage with visitors, and record wartime stories for future generations.
