Covered in a massive scaffolding structure and wrapped in plastic sheeting, for the past 8 months, Llandudno’s iconic Holy Trinity Church been undergoing extensive renovations. The town’s situation on the Creuddyn Peninsula means that the building is constantly buffeted by harsh westerly winds. This caused damage to the building over time and this had progressed to such a degree as to make parts of tower unstable, requiring emergency repairs – until the extensive works could be planned and executed.
The church has a place of prominence in the town, not just as a place of Christian Worship, but also as a landmark. As such it was so important that the work was done to a very high standard and safety. A full condition survey was carried out by Kepczyk Pearce Sanderson Architects and eventually Grosvenor Construction was selected and contracted to work on the building.
Among the work that had to be completed included the repair and replacement of stone gargoyle dragons, of which there are four of them on the church’s bell tower. There was also weathered masonry on the tower, which included the pinnacles,. A rigorous restoration philosophy was followed, reusing everything that can be safely, and any new masonry being made to the same design specification as the original parts.
In addition to the masonry work on the tower, the chancel roof at the rear of the church leaked , the whole roof had to be re-slated. This was an interesting and complex job, due to the curved form at the rear of the roof. Grosvenor collaborated with Greenough & Sons Roofing Contractors Ltd who used heather blue slates from Penrhyn Quarry, widely believed to be some of the best slates in the world. Atom Scaffolding provided the very extensive scaffolding erections.
